An under strength Eyemouth United travelled to Edinburgh on Saturday to face a much fancied Craigroyston side. Missing K. Ainslie, S. Simpson, Coyle, J. Simpson, Hastie, Wilson and long term absentee Buchan, manager Hudson called upon his squad and was still able to field a relatively strong side in their absence. On a lush, carpet like pitch the match was played in glorious sunshine, with a slight breeze - ideal conditions for their second league game of the season. Eyemouth started the match brightly against the wind and could of been ahead within the first ten minutes only for Walker to blast wide from an acute angle leaving team mate Shennan bamboozled as to why the winger hadn't squared the pass to him for an almost certain tap in. Craigroyston then came at the visitors and used the full width of the pitch to their advantage. With two tricky wingers and a big, powerful target man however, they failed to deliver the pin point passes needed to pass the rearguard of youngster G. Windram, Baxendale, J. Ainslie and Wales in the Eyemouth back four. M. Windram was key to the fishermen's counter attacking style and was spraying passes left and right throughout the opening half. Shennan came close with a driven shot and Jess down the right linked up well with J. Ainslie, only for the final ball to be cut out by the Craigroyston defence on a few occassions. Craigroyston won numerous corners throughout, but Eyemouth's resilient defence meant any chances from these were half chances. A mixup towards the interval resulted in Avery superbly saving in a one on one leaving the home sides forward kicking the ground for missing the best chance of the game. G. Windram also kept them at bay with a superbly timed tackle down the left hand side of the pitch. For the Borders side, the emphasis was much the same as the first half after the break - simply play exactly the same way and a chance will come. With this fresh in the players minds as they went on the pitch, it was to be proved a short lived thought as these plans were turned upside down within five minutes. After an attack down the left from Walker, the home side quickly broke away. This resulted in their winger cutting inside past numerous maroon shirts before firing a deflected shot into the net. From kick-off, M. Windram threaded through a ball to Sword who shot straight at the Craigroyston keeper. A golden opportunity to instantly level. From this attack, the Edinburgh side broke away and their strong centre forward then rolled his marker G. Windram before accelerating towards Avery's goal. Enroute he was illegally stopped in his tracks by Wales as he was about to shoot with a penalty awarded - which he slotted home. Eyemouth fought throughout the half, but another goal on the hour mark, a long ball hit forward for the striker to smash home, was to end any hopes of a point. The Craigroyston substitute latched onto another through ball to lob his effort over Avery for number four and right at the death a fifth was added from a corner to complete the scoring. Although a large scoreline, the result flattered Craigroyston in a game which was alot closer than it seemed had chances been tucked away by the visiting team. Eyemouth will now travel to Stirling University for another league encounter still missing key players. Despite this, they will be looking to get back to winning ways against the students after this minor setback. |
