A break from league action this week for Eyemouth United as they welcomed Easthouses Lily to Warner Park in the Cup 1st Round. With skipper M. Windram absent, Wilson and Hastie suspended and Shennan unavailable, manager Carl Hudson called on his squad to come together and fight for their places.
With a downfield breeze, Eyemouth shot with the elements in the first half and immediately got their passing game going. J. Ainslie in particular impressed with his forward runs from fullback. Walker came close to scoring from one of his centres and Sword also saw a shot whistle wide after good interplay between J. Simpson, S. Simpson and himself. After fifteen minutes the home side took a deserved lead through K. Ainslie. The centre half meeting a Sword corner to power home the opener with his head. The cup tie was made interesting shortly after this when S. Simpson was dismissed for a late challenge on his opponent down the left. Harsh in many onlookers eyes considering a similar tackle from the opposition only resulted in a caution from a very inconsistent referee. Wales was sacrificed for G. Windram as Hudson looked to hold onto the lead in a 3-5-1 formation. Easthouses threatened down the wings using the extra space, but Avery was on hand to make two good saves from their forward. They then rattled the crossbar and had a shot go inches wide allowing United to hold onto their lead at half-time.
After the interval, Easthouses constantly attacked, but the determined defence and midfield of ‘the fishermen’ made it as hard as they could for them by pressing them in key areas. Avery managed to clear with his head in the Eyemouth goal when a standard punch seemed the obvious way to clear and two goalmouth scrambles again failed to let the visitors back into the game. At the other end the pace of J. Simpson, Sword and Walker always gave the Warner Park side hope of adding to their lead and fifteen minutes from the end J. Simpson broke free to astutely lob his effort up and over the oncoming keeper into the net. He then ran to his manager after bagging his first goal of the new season. Substitute Patterson could then of made it three, but failed to convert after rounding the keeper. A fantastic last ditch tackle from the Lily centre half keeping him out. A late goal in injury time proved only a consolation goal for the visitors meaning the ten men of United progress into the second round.
A notable introduction to the second half was Tiago Ferreira, who has made a full recovery from his concussion almost two weeks ago. The incident resulted in the Brazilian being air lifted to hospital for precautionary scans. The club would like to thank all that helped out.
This week the club are back to league action in the Capital against promotion hopefuls Craigroyston.
