With last week’s opening fixture against Berwick Rangers Reserves abandoned due to an unintentional collision, which resulted in Ferreira being airlifted to hospital. Eyemouth again had to prepare themselves for their first match of the season, with a recovering Brazilian on the sideline cheering them on. Coldstream, who many people believe will bounce straight back to the East of Scotland Premier Division under the guidance of Lamb were the visitors to Warner Park in a much anticipated local derby.
In a frantically paced tussle, Coldstream dominated possession from kick off, but found themselves coming up against a very resilient defence in the form of Wales, K. Ainslie, J. Ainslie and Baxendale. The latter was making his first appearance for United against his former club and almost made the dream start to life at the coastal club, coming close to heading in a Sword corner. Unfortunately, he failed to find the target after losing his marker. At the other end Streamers’ front man Crawford went close to scoring against his home town club only to find himself sliding inches short of a G. Wales cross. M. Wales, elder brother of the Streamers wide man, then acrobatically cleared a Crawford header off the Eyemouth line and to safety. Coldstream continued to put pressure on ‘the Fishermen’, but failed to capitalise on numerous corners and free kicks. Former Whitehill Welfare forward, Shennan was also making his debut for the home side and constantly terrorised the visitors backline with his pace and ability to run into the channels. He came close midway through the half after losing his marker, only to see his effort glide wide of the post. It was hard to see where a goal would come from in such a tightly contested game until a slip from Baxendale allowed Zavaroni to get in down the right. The pacy striker then cut inside to hit a rasping shot past Avery and into the net to give Coldstream the lead. Both sides had further chances, but at the interval Coldstream, who enjoyed the most possession in the first half found themselves with their noses in front.
After the break Eyemouth came out fighting and were eager to get back on level terms. Windram being instrumental in the middle of the park linking up play. It didn’t take them long to level and within minutes, Shennan nodded down a Baxendale punt forward into the path of fellow debutant Walker who slotted home at the second attempt. Five minutes later and the game was turned on its head. A stray back pass was stupidly picked up by the visiting keeper. From an acute angle, S. Simpson blasted underneath the jumping wall and into the net. They then attempted to build on this further and had the upright not come to Coldstream’s rescue from a J. Simpson attempt then they would have done. The tall, gangly Irvine then came on for the Streamers’, but immediately got involved in silly, unnecessary exchanges which played into the home sides hands. Long shots and free kicks sailing out of play made it easy for the backline of Eyemouth, with Coldstream failing to play to their strengths down the wings. The home side could of given themselves some breathing space had youngster Patterson not managed to clear the goal from two yards out after good wing play from substitute Jess. With the minutes ticking down slowly the ball was then played into and held up in the corners to ensure Hudson’s men held onto their derby win.
