In the last league game of their 2009/10 campaign, Eyemouth suffered a second 4-1 defeat at the hands of Vale of Leithen in a replica of last week’s result. Visiting Vale were looking to take all three points in a bid to clinch the East of Scotland First Division championship, but they were pipped to the title by Stirling University who beat Hawick Royal Albert to take the title on goal difference. The result from Albert Park was known well before the end of this game, which was delayed following a serious injury to Vale winger Andy Martin in the 13th minute, and Vale would have needed to beat Eyemouth by 15 goals to snatch the title back from the students. Martin suffered ligament damage to his ankle after an Eyemouth challenge, and the game was held up by 25 minutes while an ambulance was summoned to Warner Park. When the game eventually restarted, it was Martin’s replacement Scott Moffat who immediately gave Vale the lead, collecting a low Kerr Dodds corner, turning and forcing the ball in. Aaron Somerville rattled the crossbar with a shot seconds later and six minutes later Moffat grabbed another following some great work by Somerville as he left Alan Speirs for dead down the right, firing in a cross for Moffat to touch home. Not long before half time the Fishermen pulled a goal back after Paul Lee was penalised for pushing in the area and Jordan Ainslie stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot. Moffat was unlucky for Vale when, with the last action of the first half, he struck an overhead kick that drifted just wide. Eyemouth weren’t defeated yet and were still getting forward to cause the Vale back line some problems at the restart. Darren Walker had to come out to knock the ball away from Eyemouth’s Johnny Simpson as he got in behind the visiting defence. At the other end Moffat rounded Dean Avery, John Buchan put in a saving tackle and the ball broke to Somerville who fired against the bar. Another attempt from a lay-off by Darren Gillon saw Somerville canon a shot off the bar yet again, but a minute later Vale pulled further ahead as a Dodds corner was knocked into his own net by the unfortunate John Buchan. Seven minutes from time Moffat completed his hat trick as he chased down a back pass, keeper Avery’s clearance hitting off Moffat and rebounding into the net. Eyemouth gaffer Carl Hudson will be disappointed with his side’s 10th place finish, especially as the Fishermen have put in some excellent performances this season with consistency in the end proving their main problem. |
