With second place promotion hopefuls Vale having won every single home game of the 2009-10 campaign, the trip to Victoria Park was to be no easy task for United. But it was far from a straightforward victory for the home side, with Eyemouth having some good spells throughout the 90 minutes. The game got off to a whirlwind start and in the worst possible way for the Fishermen, Vale taking the lead straight from the kick off as Aaron Somerville pounced on a loose back pass to stab the ball past Dean Avery. Four minutes later Eyemouth equalised. Striker Stuart Coyle rose to meet a corner and directed his header on target. Vale keeper Paul Greenhill was on the line, but the power in Coyle’s header meant that he could do no more than divert it into the roof of the net. Not long afterwards the Fishermen were unlucky not to take the lead, when Mark Windram saw a shot bounce-back off the post. Vale showed why they haven’t lost out at home this season in this fast-paced first half, two efforts from Somerville drifted narrowly wide, while Darren Gillon put Kerr Dodds through with a great chance, but the finish lacked conviction and Avery saved well. Another Somerville shot was followed by Paul Thomson heading wide from an Andy Martin corner. Vale felt they should have had a penalty when the ball appeared to strike the hand on an Eyemouth defender, but the ball broke to Gavin Tainsh, who shot just wide. At the restart the Fishermen stepped up their game and had an excellent spell in the early part od the second half. Vale keeper Darren Walker had to look lively to deny James Wilson, while in-form striker Andrew Sword was left holding his head in his hands after a shot from 20 yards cleared the crossbar by a matter of millimetres. It was a good time to score of Vale wanted to win the game and it was ex-Eyemouth player Darren Gillon who found the net for Vale, blasting home from a close range after Scott Moffat had carried the ball into the area. Dodds had the ball in the net for Vale shortly after, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Avery. However, Vale did stretch their lead in the 80th minute after some food work down the right by Dodds, Gillon swept home a cross. Things got worse for Eyemouth as defender Andrew Hastie conceded a penalty and saw red for a kick at Vale substitute Moffat, who was carried off the field. Somerville converted the penalty for the home side, giving Avery no chance from the spot. |
