50 years to the week after meeting Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup quarter finals, Eyemouth United travelled to Whitestone Park to take on Border rivals Peebles. The fishermen secured the win with two late goals in a three-minute spell. With gaffer Carl Hudson away at a course, assistant manager Gary Smith took the reigns and Eyemouth built on last week’s draw at Kelso by gaining all three points for the first time in 2010. Eyemouth started brightly and posed a threat after 14 minutes when David Simmons foiled Andrew Sword with a fine save, while at the other end Peter Shearlaw was narrowly off target with a couple of good efforts. The score could have been one-a-piece at half time with excellent chances falling to Andrew Sword and the home side’s Daryl Johnson, but both failed to capitalise and the game remained goalless at the break. Shortly after the break Dean Avery pulled off a brilliant close range save to deny Shearlaw and keep the visitors level, while from a Sean Simpson corner kick at the other end, Eyemouth substitute Johnny Simpson headed the ball just over the bar when it looked easier to score. Eyemouth eventually broke the deadlock on 79 minutes when John Buchan made a menacing run into the Peebles box. The diving Simmons could only parry Buchan’s shot to Alan Speirs, who bundled the ball home after a scramble in the Peebles goal-mouth. The Fishermen doubled their tally just three minutes later. A James Wilson through ball sent Sean Simpson racing into the Peebles box before the diving Simmons deflected his angular shot onto the post, only for Mark Windram to slot the ball home from the rebound. The home side didn’t give up and reduced the leeway after 87 minutes when Avery failed to gather a Shearlaw free-kick from the right and Paul Wlesh slammed the loose ball home from close range. Eyemouth came close to adding a third goal four minutes into injury time with a 16-yard shot from Scott Adamson, which came rebounding back down off the underside of the crossbar before being cleared off the line by Craig Dilworth. The ball had arguably crossed the goal-line but the referee waved aside the Eyemouth protests. This important win was enough to see Carl Hudson’s men leap-frog Peebles in the First Division, a move they can potentially repeat on Saturday when they meet Ormiston, who are currently sitting just one point and place above the Berwickshire side. |
