A Point At Last, But Still Disappointment

The Fishermen finally picked up a point on Saturday in this Border derby at Kelso United, but were disappointed not to take three after leading for most of the game. Kelso and Eyemouth produced a draw for the second time this season in the entertaining game at Woodside Park, and although this was far from a dirty game, referee Mark Doyle issued eight yellow cards and a red in the match. The visitors got off to the best start and after four minutes a cross from Alan Jess was met by Jordan Ainslie but his shot was well saved by Scott Dowie in the Kelso goal. Eyemouth went ahead on 15 minutes when a speculative cross from the right touchline into the Kelso box by full back Jordan Ainslie deceived everybody, including the Kelso keeper, and landed in the back of the net after hitting the inside of the post. Kelso responded when both Niall McGurn and Chris Black had shots at goal but both were off target. With 30 minutes gone a long kick downfield by Scott Dowie found Jamie Swales and the young midfielder’s shot hit the outside of the post with Eyemouth keeper Shaun Simpson scrambling across his line. The Fishermen could have doubled their lead five minutes from half time when a shot from striker Stuart Coyle was goal bound, but a terrific save from Scott Dowie diving to his right kept the visitors from going further ahead. Kelso almost equalised in the 42nd minute after some good work down the right by Chris Black who found Derek Burnett in the box. The big striker managed to get round the keeper but his shot hit the underside of the bar and was cleared by the Eyemouth defence. The home side came out on the offensive after the break and put pressure on the Eyemouth defence when centre back Lawrie Dunn had his right foot shot cleared and this was followed by Eyemouth full back Michael Wales almost heading into his own goal from a cross by Jamie Swales. Kelso kept pressing throughout the second half and laid siege to the Eyemouth goal in the last ten minutes. A cross by Craig Edwards into the box found the head of Andrew Cook but his header went straight to Simpson. Eyemouth then went on the counter attack following the a break down the left, the ball fell to Alan Jess and the winger’s shot went past Scott Dowie but was cleared off the line by Lawrie Dunn. But it was heartbreak for Eyemouth when Kelso got the equaliser with two minutes to go. A ball down the right was chased by Lawrie Dunn who managed to beat Michael Wales and whip in a cross to Derek Burnett who headed past the keeper from close range. A minute later Eyemouth were down to ten men when Alan Jess was sent off for a second bookable offence. The action didn’t stop there and Burnett nearly nicked it for the home team when his header hit the underside of the bar. But Eyemouth came back and almost clinched the game themselves with the last kick of the match but Andrew Cook saved the day for Kelso with a last gasp clearance.
