Eyemouth manager Carl Hudson said he felt positive going into Saturday’s King Cup match but with three regular first teamers away and strong opposition it was never going to be an easy game. However it was the Berwickshire side who got their noses in front when Johnny Simspon broke down the left hand side before playing the ball to Stuart Coyle who left the Whitehill defence for dead to score. With his side well on top Carl Hudson didn’t want the referee to blow the half time whistle and as he expected, Eyemouth’s Premier League opponents came out all guns blazing in the second half. Ross Allum levelled the game on the hour mark and Andrew Kidd put Whitehill ahead shortly after. But United weren’t in the mood to give up and after some good work by Andrew Sword, Stuart Coyle got his second of the game to make it 2-2. And it wasn’t long before the Eyemouth striker was celebrating his hat-trick and his side were on course for a memorable victory. Unfortunately this wasn’t to be though as right on the stroke of full time, Kieran Ainslie brought down Ross Allum in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Andrew Kidd stepped up to the mark to take the tie into extra time and then there was another twist in the tail when Whitehill defender Allan Cornett was sent off for an off the ball incident. However it was the 10 men from the Premier League who snatched victory with ten minutes remaining off extra time thanks to a goal from Gary Calvey. At the end of a gruelling game, Whitehill manager Gary Aitchison admitted that his side robbed Eyemouth of a place in the next round and Carl Hudson said of his players, “everyone to a man gave everything they had”. He said that after some pleasing performances it was frustrating that United weren’t getting the victories they deserve. He added: “Sometimes you play well and you lose and then others you play badly but still win. At the end of the day though points make prizes. We need to stop conceding silly goals, Kieran was gutted at the end of the match as Whitehill would have been a big scalp for us. I’ve been saying since the start of the season that we’re a whisker away from being a really good side.” |
