Eyemouth United have fought their way into the final of the Alex Jack Cup, sending Easthouses Lily home with their tails between their legs on Saturday. It was touch and go whether the game could be played at all with the referee warning he may be forced to call it off at any time due to the less than perfect conditions, with gale force winds and driving rain impeding the standard of football. Playing with the wind behind them, Easthouses dominated the first half, but were unable to find a way past the packed home defence. Beattie did hit the back of the net for the visitors on 40 minutes but the goal was disallowed as he handled the ball in the build up, and with the Fishermen equal to their every effort the score remained level at half time. The second half saw Easthouses again dominate the early exchanges but it was Eyemouth who took the lead in the 65th minute. A free kick from inside the home side’s half was helped goalwards by the wind. Hynd raced from the Lily goal to punch clear but connected poorly, the ball landing at the feet of Scott Adamson who made no mistake from eight yards. The visitors were furious, believing their keeper had been impeded but the referee allowed the goal to stand despite the Lily protests. Eyemouth doubled their lead five minutes later, and again controversy reigned. An Easthouses attack was broken up and the home side cleared their lines with a long ball. Johnny Simpson collected the clearance and raced clear of the defence but could only manage to win a corner. Ferry was furious, claiming Simpson has been offside and was subsequently booked for his protests towards the assistant referee. The resulting corner was nodded on at the far post by James Wilson to Andrew Sword who prodded the ball home. Easthouses kept trying, with the home side happy to counter attack but any hopes the visitors had of forcing the game into extra time were gone when Ferry was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for dissent. The Alex Jack Cup will be played at Preston Athletic’s ground, Pennypit Park in Prestonpans on Sunday 29th November with a 2.00pm kick off. |
