Eyemouth United took the scalps of Premier League Tynecastle in the second round of the Alex Jack Cup thanks to a sterling defensive effort and a great team performance. Tynecastle took the lead midway through the first half through a dubious penalty, Darren Aird stepping up and slotting the ball home. But the Eyemouth heads didn’t drop and they were determined not to let Tynecastle extended their lead. The visitors rallied and equalised on 29 minutes when Thiago Ferreira threaded a 40-yard pass to Alan Jess who scampered forward, spied Gilbertson rushing off his line and coolly lobbed the keeper from 20 yards out. Eyemouth then took the lead four minutes later. Mark Windram played a one-two with Thiago Ferreira wide on the left then cut inside onto his right and curled a peach high into the net. The Fishermen were then subjected to a period of heavy pressure as Tynecastle pushed to level the score and the ball was cleared off the line more than once. But Jordan and Kieran Ainslie and John Buchan were solid at the back and it was Eyemouth who bagged another goal with eight minutes remaining, Andrew Sword finding the top corner of the net. Eyemouth gaffer Carl Hudson was delighted by the result. “The football that we played was not as good as in previous weeks but the effort was once again outstanding,” Hudson praised. “They are giving everything they can out there and we came away with an absolutely fantastic result against a mid table Premier club. The defence was excellent and Dean Avery made some outstanding saves. Sean and Johnny Simpson were a big plus factor in the game too, they were excellent up front, neither got a goal but if anyone deserved one, they did. It was a phenomenal result for us”. Eyemouth’s reward for this cup win is a home tie in the semi-finals against fellow First Division side Easthouses Lily on Saturday 24th October. |
