Eyemouth United manager Carl Hudson said he was pleased with his team’s performance on Saturday although like in their other matches so far this season it was a story of missed opportunities. Both sides were greeted with fantastic weather when they took to the pitch at Gretna and United had a new face in their line up in the form of Andrew Hastie who joined Kieran and Jordan Ainslie at the back. The early part of the match was dominated by a midfield battle and it was Eyemouth who had the first real effort on goal, Mark Windram broke free of the defence but unfortunately he sent his shot wide. Sean and Johnny Simpson also looked dangerous leading the away side’s attack but the Gretna defence stood strong. After a goalless first half, both sides really went for it in the second half and it was the home side that took the lead with 20 minutes to go. A ricochet went the way off Adam McMath and the ball flew into the net. And Gretna extended their lead before the finish when Andrew Hastie turned the ball into his own net. Carl Hudson said the result was harsh on his team as they put in a good performance. “The problem is that we aren’t putting the chances away while the teams we’re playing against are. Half of the team is made up of lads from Eyemouth and the other half are from Berwick. I’ve not really been able to keep a settled side yet but the lads that have played so far have all done well.” United will be hoping to get some balls in the net when they take on Whitehill Welfare in round two of the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup at the weekend. And with matches against Vale of Leithen and Craigroyston coming up they will have to be at their best. |
