Eyemouth lost two points in the last minute of this Border derby after a last ditch Kelso effort was deflected into the net. The early stages of this game were very ordinary with both teams getting bogged down in midfield; in fact it wasn’t until the 23rd minute that a keeper had to be called into action. A shot from Duncan Aitchison was parried by Kelso keeper Scott Dowie and eventually cleared by the visitors defence. Kelso had their first chance a minute later when some good interplay by the Kelso forwards Derek Burnett and Mark Lockhart set up Barry Rayson but his shot just went over the cross bar. The visitors went ahead in the 28th minute when a free kick was fired into the Eyemouth box and Kelso top scorer Derek Burnett was there to challenge and get a head to the ball under pressure to get the ball past keeper Dean Avery. Kelso were now beginning to exert pressure on the Eyemouth defence and striker Derek Burnett had a couple of chances in the space of three minutes both supplied by Sean Philips, the first from a long throw in and the second from a good through ball, but both times the Kelso front man blazed over. The visitors created another chance ten minutes from half time with Burnett and Lockhart again combining well but this time Dean Avery saved well. Eyemouth should have scored eight minutes after the restart when a cross into the box found Johnny Simpson unmarked but he headed over the bar. After 64 minutes Kelso almost doubled their lead when a ball from midfield found Burnett running through on goal. He flicked the ball over the advancing keeper but the Eyemouth defence got back in time to clear off the line. A minute later the Fishermen were level when a good ball from Alan Jess on the right was met by the head of James Wilson who diverted the ball past Scott Dowie. Eyemouth went ahead five minutes later when Andrew Sword latched onto a through ball and his strike hit the roof of the net. Kelso rallied in the final ten minutes and a good save by Dean Avery kept a Burnett effort out, but the visitors equalised in the last minute when a shot from Steven Tait was deflected over Dean Avery and into the net. |
