A dramatic 94th minute equaliser saw Eyemouth snatch a point at Mayfield Park on Saturday. Playing their first game since the end of November, Eyemouth travelled to the Newbattle Complex looking to take their first points of 2010. Gaffer Carl Hudson had no selection worries and Eyemouth took the game to the home side, fielding a strong 11. Both sides were well up for this match after a lengthy spell sidelined due to the weather, but it was the home side who took the lead on 35 minutes. A Love free kick was headed home by David Edgar from 12 yards. But all was square at the interval after Andrew Sword capitalised on a Lily mix-up. A pass from goalkeeper Hynd put Gow in trouble and the resulting tackle saw the ball played out left where it held up in the wet conditions. It was gathered Sean Simpson who swung the ball into the penalty area for the unmarked Sword to slam home from eight yards. Lily, playing their first game since November 7, pressed to regain their advantage in the second half, and it didn’t take them long to take the lead. Eyemouth failed to clear their lines and a Smith pass was turned home by Ryan Curran from 10 yards. The home side’s tails were now up and the visitors had to sustain a period of pressure, but the Eyemouth back line stayed strong. Easthouses Lily could have doubled their lead on several occasions with Eyemouth trying to hit them on the break but they failed to capitalise on the pressure and paid the penalty with seconds remaining. Kidd rose to clear a long through ball but it was taken off his head by Gaylor, falling to Andrew Sword who toe’d the ball past the advancing Hynd. The 94th minute equaliser was the last action of the game and Eyemouth returned to Warner Park with a well-deserved point. |
